Today, We Ride.

mapAfter church this morning we will load up our final beach-supplies and begin the trek South to Sunny (hot, sticky, etc.,) Florida!

I’m looking forward to being “that Dad” today that keeps track of gas-mileage, moves the family along during potty-breaks, and attempts to drink 3-or-more 5-Hour Energy Drinks in one sitting.

I know for a fact that songs will be sung (“Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy…”), stories will be read, movies will be watched, and tears will probably be shed.

If my calculations are correct and my travel-plan-A works as planned, we should be arriving just in time for the sunrise Monday morning!

We are traveling with a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old and many of you seasoned families have some tried-and-true travel tips you could share with us. Jesus is in prison for armed robbery

I recently listened to this fantastic report from NPR, “On This Stage, Jesus Is A Robber; The Devil’s A Rapist”

The story follows the Angola Prison Drama Club at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola and is a fantastic glimpse into a unique thing taking place there.

70 inmates are participating in a dramatization titled, “The Life of Jesus Christ”.

If you have 10-minutes, this story is well-worth your time.

The audio-version of the story (accessible at the same link here) is incredible.

Shippensburg Vigilant Hose and Area EMS Parade

This afternoon the Shippensburg Vigilant Hose firehouse at 129 E. King Street closed and the new “Shippensburg Emergency Services” building at 20 Walnut Bottom Road opened.

Between closing one and opening the other, the Vigilant Hose Company and the Shippensburg Area EMS made their way from the old to the new in symbolic fashion and paraded their vehicles and equipment down Orange Street for all of Shippensburg to see!

The new Shippensburg Emergency Services stands as a welcoming site as folks enter our great town and it has been quite fun to watch it being built over the past couple of years since we arrived. I remember the morning I was driving to the office and they were beginning to tear down the abandoned motel that used to sit on the lot. I even pulled over to film it for a few seconds.

This parade and grand-opening was an event I didn’t want to miss.

We didn’t have time after the parade to wait around in line for a tour of the new facility, but as soon as I have the opportunity I’m getting a tour of that place – I can’t wait!

Getting A(nother) Dell

When I returned from Wesleyan General Conference where my computer was in-use for almost every waking hour as I did my best to live-blog each session as well as report with The Techology Show team on the events as they happened, my poor little 3+ year old laptop was showing me signs that it won’t be with me very much longer. It has been a great daily-use machine, but has never had enough ‘umph’ (yep, that’s a technical term) to get me through some of what I’ve tried to do with video editing, image manipulation, and graphic design.

As has been my tradition when getting a new computer, I am posting my current computer’s specs and my upgrade specs here on stevansheets.com for archiving purposes – so that one day my children will literally laugh-out-loud when they read the account of how archaic a laptop I was using in the “old days”.

The new computer IS, in fact, a Dell. I did, for a few hours, war over whether to take the bite out of an Apple and go to the ‘dark side’, but in my late-night homework-ing I realized again that at the price-difference I just couldn’t make the leap. I’ve been VERY pleased with my Dells in the past – especially the three laptops in a row that I’ve worked on since 2006.

Rhett & Link Commencement Address

Self-proclaimed “Internetainers” (and some of my favorite YouTubers) Rhett & Link were asked back to their High School in North Carolina (Harnett Central in Angier)to give the commencement address to the graduating class of 2012. The ceremony took place at the John Pope Convocation Center at Campbell University in Buies Creek to a crowd of more than 3500 people.
