We just returned home from a two-day celebration of the life of Wilson D. Miller, my grandfather. It truly was a celebration of his life and his ‘home-going’.

I am so thankful to be a part of a family that celebrates AND mourns.

Did you catch that? “celebrates AND mourns”…

I think sometimes Christians live by an ‘either/or’ option here instead of a both and. Those who celebrate WITHOUT mourning quote Matthew 8:12, where Jesus tells his disciples to let the “dead bury their own dead”. Christians who find difficultly with the “celebration” part of a funeral of a co-heir with Christ might focus attention on Jesus visible grief at the death of Lazarus in John 11. In all honesty, “Jesus wept.” (11:35) doesn’t resemble joyful celebration at all, I don’t think.

I believe the healthy response to loss, rather, includes both mourning and celebration. I personally find it easier to ‘do’ the celebrating and much more difficult to ‘do’ the mourning. I recalled numerous memories over the past couple of days that enabled me to do both – and I’m thankful to have been surrounded by friends and family who walked and continue to walk that road together.

I had the privilege again this morning of being a guest on The Techology Show this morning. We chatted about a variety of subjects including Rob Bell & his book “Love Wins”. We also chatted in length about the book “Heaven is For Real” by Todd Burpo which I reviewed here a few months ago.

Here is the video of today’s podcast:

Thanks to Tony, Heath, Matthew, and Steve for inviting me again to be involved in this!

I love finding out what some of my peers are doing after I’ve lost contact with them due to distance and time since high school or college. One of my college peers, Peter Heck, has been up to quite a bit since graduation 10-years ago. Peter hosts a radio show called “The Peter Heck Radio Show“.

The Peter Heck Radio Show debuted in the summer of 2004 on 1350 AM, WIOU Kokomo which still serves as the program’s flagship station. The show, broadcast from central Indiana, is archived on the internet every weekday immediately following each show. The program’s weekly highlights podcast is followed around the United States. Peter has been heard on nearly 200 radio stations in the country courtesy of American Family Radio Network.

On top of his radio show, Peter is also a public high school teacher and a sought-after public speaker. He has some clips of his public speaking available through YouTube and I’ve been both entertained and inspired by a few of his clips:

One of his presentations, “God and Government” is one I’d love to have opportunity to attend:

I recently watched the two-part 60 Minutes special, “Gospel for Teens”, and I think it is worth watching (and blogging about). What is taking place in Harlem is nothing short of extraordinary.

From CBSnews.com:

There’s a street in Harlem that comes alive every Saturday with the sound of gospel music. You won’t find any church there – just a brownstone full of teenagers and the woman who draws them in.
Her name is Vy Higginsen, a New York radio personality and theater producer. Five years ago she created something called “Gospel for Teens.”
